Borders with Basilicata, Calabria is the southernmost region of Italy, itself long peninsula washed by the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Ionian Sea and separated from nearby Sicily for only a few kilometers. The regional territory of 15,080 km2, is mainly affected by mountains that extended in the central part of the region, only locally give way to narrow plains. Calabria is one of the most backward regions Italian and the economy, in fact, is solely based on agriculture – hampered in the performance of the local geography – and tourism (especially seaside resort on the coast), recently growing. Catanzaro is the capital of the region, although it is the most populated city of Reggio Calabria and most frequented by tourists. Cosenza, Crotone and Vibo Valentia are headed as many provinces. Calabria boasts an important archaeological heritage; many testimonies of the extraordinary artistic wealth of this region, a crossroads of culture Greek, Byzantine, Arab and Norman, are preserved in the Museum of Reggio Calabria – where you can also admire the famous Riace Bronzes – as well as in collected minors of Crotone, Catanzaro, Cosenza and Locri. The Calabrian sea is the main resource of the region. Diamond, Scalea, Praia a Mare, Tropea and Soverato are the most renowned centers that can offer tourists a coastline bathed by crystal clear waters and picturesque scenic beauty. Finally, this region is affected by the Pollino National Park, also extended into the neighboring region of Basilicata.
