With its 10,798 km2, Abruzzo is affected by hills and mountains belonging to the Central Apennines, in the eastern part of the region, give way to expansive coastline facing the Adriatic Sea. Bordering the Marche, Lazio and Molise, this region has a strong agricultural character: cereals, vegetables, vineyards, olive groves, crops of tobacco and the famous saffron form the basis of the local economy. Only in recent years the service sector has had a good increase, while sheep farming and herding associated with it – activities historically linked to the mountain area – are in decline. The region’s capital is L’Aquila, located in a wide valley surrounded by the chains of the Gran Sasso and Velino – Sirente; Chieti, Pescara and Teramo are at the head of the remaining provinces. Besides the numerous examples of Roman civilization that enrich theaters and shrines Chieti, Teramo, L’Aquila and Sulmona, Abruzzo boasts a rich artistic heritage linked back to medieval times. In this period there was, in fact, a thriving construction, cathedrals and abbeys were built in cities, small churches were built in small towns. L’Aquila is undoubtedly the main city of the region, for art and history: its strong medieval imprint – embellished by numerous religious buildings including the suburban basilica of Santa Maria di Collemaggio and the church of S. Bernardino – was, however, significantly affected by the earthquake of 2009. What makes it particularly interesting Abruzzo is the great natural heritage that includes four parks: the Abruzzo National Park – one of the first Italian protected areas, established in 1923 – the National Park of Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga, the Park Majella National Park and the Sirente Velino. These areas offer many recreation: hiking, trekking, nature observation are just a few tips for living the country in absolute respect for nature. The Abruzzo coast in summer attracts many tourists, attracted by the wide, sandy beaches. Roseto degli Abruzzi, Giulianova, Montesilvano are the most popular areas, ideal for a relaxing and peaceful holiday. Finally, and no less interesting, the good Abruzzo cuisine: simple and meat, milk, vegetables and grains offers many typical dishes, really tasty.
