Solo travel has grown from a niche activity into a global trend, embraced by millions of travelers seeking adventure, personal growth, or simply the freedom to explore on their own terms. But who exactly are these solo travelers, and what drives them to set off on their own? In this data-driven blog post, we’ll deep dive into the key trends and insights surrounding solo travel - breaking down demographics, motivations, spending habits, and popular destinations.

The Google Trends data clearly shows a sustained and growing interest in solo travel over time. While the market did experience a temporary dip during the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdowns, the demand quickly rebounded and even surpassed pre-pandemic levels. This resurgence indicates that solo travel is more than just a passing trend - it's an increasingly popular way of exploring the world, with no signs of slowing down. The data suggests that more and more people are embracing the independence and flexibility that solo travel offers, making it a key growth segment in the travel industry for the foreseeable future.

An Interesting Trend in Solo Travel: Women Leading the Way

According to a 2023 report from Road Scholar, a leading organization that provides educational trips for older adults, revealed that 30% of the company’s tour participants are solo travelers, and of those an overwhelming 85% are women.

Another report from Hostelworld, where the majority of respondents where younger people, shows that 65% of solo travelers are female. This indicates a strong trend of female dominance in solo travel across different age groups.

The dominance of female solo travelers may be attributed to several factors, such as the growing availability of resources aimed at women traveling alone, like safety tips and female-friendly accommodations. In addition, travel companies are increasingly catering to this demographic, offering tailored experiences for solo female travelers. Whether for adventure, self-discovery, or education, women are leading the way in the solo travel movement.

How Much Do Solo Travelers Spend?

A 2023 survey highlights the diversity in how much solo travelers are willing to spend on their journeys. The largest group, 34%, typically spends between $1,000 and $2,000 per week, suggesting that this price range is a sweet spot for many. It reflects a budget that allows for comfortable accommodations, dining, and activities without going overboard.

Interestingly, a significant portion - 29% of respondents spends between $2,000 and $3,000 weekly, indicating that a considerable number of solo travelers are willing to invest more in their travel experiences, possibly opting for higher-end lodging, guided tours, or exclusive experiences.

On the other end, about 13% manage to spend $1,000 or less. This group includes budget solo travelers who stay in hostels, choose affordable destinations, or carefully manage their expenses to extend the duration of their trips.

Finally, it’s notable that only around 9% of solo travelers spend over $4,000 weekly. This smaller group likely seeks luxury travel experiences, including premium accommodations, fine dining, and more exclusive, personalized services.

Note: The majority of respondents in this survey are from the United States, Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom. This may influence the spending trends observed, as these countries typically have higher travel costs compared to other regions.

Why do people travel solo?

The most common reason for solo travel in both 2022 and 2023 is the desire to explore the world without waiting for others, though the percentage has slightly decreased from 74% in 2022 to 66% in 2023. Following that, many solo travelers (57% in 2023) highlight the importance of doing what they want, when they want, reinforcing the theme of personal freedom and independence, which is also reflected in another key reason (46% in 2023).

Interestingly, while meeting new people remains constant at 42%, there’s a slight decline in those who see personal growth as a major reason, dropping from 36% to 33%.

This data suggests that the driving factors behind solo travel are primarily related to autonomy and freedom, but there is a slight shift away from the more personal, self-development-focused motivations over time.

How old are solo travelers?

According to a recent Hostelworld survey, nearly 68% of solo travelers are under the age of 31, with the two largest age groups being 18-24 (37.7%) and 25-30 (29.4%). These numbers suggest that solo travel is particularly attractive to younger individuals who may be seeking adventure, personal growth, or freedom from the constraints of group travel. Interestingly, while younger generations dominate the solo travel space, there is still a notable presence of older travelers, 14.1% are 40 years old or older.
